UN chance to challenge detention policy
Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox says New Zealand should put Australia on the spot at the United Nations over its detention policy.
Australia is before the UN Human Rights Commission this month for its periodic review, which gives other states a chance to put questions on its performance.
Ms Fox, who last week was in Sydney meeting with the families of New Zealand detainees says that’s a chance for any state to ask questions.
"This is the opportunity for us, if we're really serious about that, about what's going on there. To put some questions directly to their government, to explain themselves around this review because while they have a sovereign state, and they can make any laws they like, they can not breach somebodies human rights,"she says.
Marama Fox says Australia’s Border Protection service seems to be deliberately targeting Maori for enforcement of tough new visa rules.
