Hato Petera whanau wants meeting with bishop
Supporters of Hato Petera College want a meeting with the Bishop of Auckland, Patrick Dunn, to discuss the closure of the school’s boarding facilities.
About three quarters of pupils boarded at the Catholic-run school until the start of this term, when the younger pupils were billeted out or left.
The senior pupils must be out at the end of the year.
Former principal Sir Toby Curtis says while some of the hostels were in poor maintenance, there were also newer buildings on the Northcote site.
"There’s an admixture of boardng arrangements and we want to get to the bottom of it. What really is the cause for the bishop to make his decision? More than that, because a decision of this magnitude, one would have thought they would have come back to the families and to the iwi to have a discussion about it," he says.
