Sharples keen on heritage role

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga has welcomed the appointment of former Maori affairs minister Sir Pita Sharples to its board and its Maori Heritage Council.
Sir Pita, who has spent a lifetime reviving and protecting the Maori performing arts, is also an advocate for greater awareness of the history and cultural heritage of Aotearoa.
He says despite the advances in understanding colonial history brought about by the work of the Waitangi Tribunal and a modern generation of New Zealand historians, too many people still draw on myths and prejudice to shape their opinions on current affairs.
