Maori Party MP Marama Fox is asking Australian Green senator Lee Rhiannon to table in the Australian parliament a letter from New Zealand MPs condemning Australia’s treatment of New Zealand citizens detained on Christmas Island.
The open letter to Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is signed by ACT leader David Seymour and Green Party Co-leader James Shaw.
It asks for the detainees to be brought back to mainland Australia and released on bail or probation until appeals are heard on their deportations.
Mrs Fox, who was in Sydney for yesterday’s National Congress of Australia's First Peoples, says what she has heard from detainees’ families indicates there are serious breaches of human rights.
