Maori lift lid on secret life after army
A new book will lift the lid on the shadowy world of Maori working in the international private military.
Author Maria Bargh says secuity or training jobs in the world's trouble spots are part of the career path for former members of the New Zealand defence forces, whcih include a high proportion of Maori.
She says most Maori will know someone in their extended whanau who have worked in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Some of these people have a kind of confidentiality clause, so they're not supposed to talk about what they do, but a lot of them are just very humble and say 'Oh I'm just a driver,' or 'I just stand there,' but actually I think there's a lot more to what they do and it's a lot more interesting than perhaps they let on. They earn money but they also contribute back to their own hapu and marae," Dr Bargh says.
A Hidden Economy: Maori in the privatised military industry will be published next month by Huia.
