Maori land key to Bay of Plenty plan
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell says the new Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Economic Action Plan will give Maori more support to develop their land.
The plan, which was developed in consultation with local government, iwi and other stakeholders, was launched yesterday by Mr Flavell and Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce.
Priority areas include increasing the utilisation of Maori land, agribusiness, aquaculture, education and skills, forestry, geothermal and horticulture,
Mr Flavell says Maori own more than 400,000 hectares in the region.
He says partnerships, joint ventures and knowledge sharing can help tem develop that land,
The Action Plan will also complement the reform of Te Ture Whenua Maori Act which the minister says will make it easier for Maori land owners to use their land.
