Te Kotahitanga invigorated by minister’s indecision
Te Kotahitanga o Nga Hapu Ngapuhi has resolved to press on with its attempt to find a hapu-based settlement of Ngapuhi claims.
About 150 people attended a hui in Whangarei yesterday to hear a report on the first formal meeting between Te Kotahitanga leaders and Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson.
Co-chair Rudy Taylor says it endorsed the findings of the Waitangi Tribunal that the way a mandate was given to the Ngapuhi Runanga-backed body Tuhoronuku was flawed.
Te Kotahitanga has proposed holding hui two days a week for the next two months with Tuhoronuku and the Crown to work through the issues raised by the tribunal.
Mr Taylor says the mood is clearly for a settlement process that takes more account of what hapu want.
"The mandate was given to Tuhoronuku and everyone knows that. They had a job to do and they didn't deliver on the conditions of the contract. The Minister felt that there were things he wasn't liking and that's up to them to decide how they are going to take that on, but we are saying 'Hey, everyone in the camp of Ngapuhi, come and join us,'" he says.
