Robert Solomon the link for Ngati Toa Rangatira
Ngati Toa Rangatira is in mourning for its former runanga chair.
Robert Solomon died this morning at Wellington Hospital from complications after surgery.
He was in his mid–70s.
Mr Solomon chaired the Porirua-based iwi at the time it opened negotiations for its historic claims settlement, and also chaired the Takapuwahia Marae Committee.
Ngati Toa spokesperson Matiu Rei says he was part of the glue that kept the iwi together.
He says he was a humble man who always thought about people, and he'll be missed.
He was known in his youth as an extremely fast sprinter and winger, but serious asthma held him back from many activities.
Robert Solomon is survived by his wife Jean and his two sons and two daughters.
