Peters sees chance for progress in Ngapuhi

Northland MP Winston Peters says he detects a sea change in the way a settlement could be negotiated for Ngapuhi's historic claims.
The iwi is bracing itself for weeks of hui between the mandated claim negotiating body Tuhoronuku, opposing hapu under the banner of Te Kotahitanga, and crown officials to discuss the issues raised by a Waitangi Tribunal report on the mandate process.
Mr Peters says not so long ago Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson had been disparaging of Te Kotahitanga co-chairs Rudy Taylor and Pita Tipene.
But he has changed his tune now the tribunal has reported.
"Things have moved decisively in terms of the minister having to change his position and not pursuing a forced mandate that was being led by Sonny Tau so there is a chance now that this matter can be resolved at a far greater speed than was going to happen before," Mr Peters says.
While he was part of the Labour-led government he was able to help resolve similar disputes in the Central north Island negotiations.
