Farm pollution threat to raranga
Ahipara is preparing for an influx of more than 200 weavers from around the motu for their biennial national hui.
Pare Nathan from host Te Whare Whiri Toi says the craft is in good heart, with a lot of younger weavers taking up raranga at wananga and polytechs.
What’s not in good heart is the resources people use to weave.
"Just what’s happening to some of our rauemi around the place like even the kuta. All the diseases and whats happening in the lakes because in the lakes the kuta is actually dying and thats from some of the seepage from the farms", she says.
Pare Nathan says in the far north extraction of swamp kauri and draining of wetlands is affecting flax supplies.
