Terror raids anniversary time for healing
Tuhoe activist Tame Iti says the police raid on Ruatoki eight years ago today was a sad day for the nation, but people are finally starting to move on.
Armed police conducted raids around the country to arrest people involved in what they claimed were terrorist training camps run by Mr Iti in Te Urewera forest.
He and three others were convicted of arms offences in a trial that relied on illegally obtained evidence, and subsequent investigations found the police had also acted illegally in detaining people during the raids.
Mr Iti says the response to the new documentary The Price of Peace shows people are still asking questions about what happened, but police apologies have made a difference.
" The apologies were an important factor of those mamae that needed to be heard. I guess the documentary was able to share that and that view what happened at that time to the world. I think we have moved on for our whanau, " he says.
Tame Iti says he is putting some of his feelings about the raids into a new mural at Taneatua.
