Honorary degree for Tauranga tohunga
Waikato University is to award Tauranga kaumatua Morehu Ngatoko Rahipere an honorary doctorate for his contribution to the university over many years.
The orator and expert in tikanga and kawa has whakapapa to two of the principal tribes of the Tauranga Moana region, Ngati Ranginui, and Ngai Te Rangi, as well as to Ngati Awa.
He is a strong advocate of the long-standing relationship between Ngati Ranginui and the Kingitanga.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Quigley says he is an example of someone who selflessly gives of his time and skills for the public good.
He was deeply involved in the education faculty’s Te Kotahitanga research programme, and also led the initiative to establish the Maharaia Winiata Research Institute in Tauranga.
Mr Rahipere will receive his honorary doctorate during next Tuesday’s graduation ceremony in Hamilton.
