Hato Petera closes boarding hostels
The boarding hostels at Auckland’s Hato Petera are being boarded up as the new board gives up on the fight to keep them open.
Lance O’Sullivan, who took over as chair of the Whanau o Hato Petera Trust Board in August when Tame Te Rangi stood down at the end of his term, says senior students in Years 11, 12 and 13 will remain until the end of the year, but years 9 and 10 students have been billeted out or left.
He says some of the buildings are cold and draughty, the plumbing is inadequate, and higher levels of specialised staffing would be needed to meet the needs of students.
Dr O’Sullivan says the trust and the Auckland Catholic Diocese are working to address the school’s financial predicament.
It is also considering changes to its governance model.
He says the school is working closely with the Ministry of Education and the Diocese to ensure that the transition does not adversely affect the wellbeing and learning of the students.
