From whenua to whare service starts
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell wants his new Maori Housing Network to eventually be a comprehensive service.
Te Puni Kokiri picked up just over $7 million in this year’s budget for Maori housing, and has also taken over administration of a similar sum in the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment.
The network is a response to a recommendation from the Auditor General for a single co-ordinated point of contact to better support tangata whenua to build on Maori land.
Mr Flavel says more than that could be in the pipeline.
"(It will) have within it an opportunity for those who want to move into warmer rentals and get information abut that all the way through to their first home and things associated around land, around money, around budgeting etc right through to those who might want to be in housing development so that will be our contribution to it and we hope to build on it in the next few years in budget bids," he says.
Te Ururoa Flavell says over the past few years doing small scale projects Te Puni Kokiri has shown it can do a better job than mainstream agencies like Housing New Zealand.
