Collective ownership hard to grasp
Labour Party leader Andrew Little is ready to embrace his inner socialist, with a little help from Maori and Pasifika.
Writer Albert Wendt has challenged the party to say it's still socialist.
Mr Little says the label doesn't mean much to people these days, and he prefers to break it down into the way Labour does things to sustain communities, support people and use the power of government and collective endeavour to ensure all benefit.
He says his union experience opened his eyes to the collective strength of Maori culture.
"You know even in the treaty settlements and land issues how Pakeha, it's taken us 160 years to get used to the idea of land that is collectively owned, that it can't just be parceled off to one person and the reality is we have struggled with that and that's why I think we have struggled with coming to terms with what the treaty means and also getting the settlements sorted out," Mr Little says.
