Wananga builds unity with kapa haka

New Zealand's largest Maori tertiary institution is so big it can run its own kapa haka competition.
Teams from the different takiwa of Te Wananga o Aotearoa go up against each other tomorrow at the ASB Arena in Mount Maunganui .
Spokesperson James Ihaka says the biennial Te Mata Wananga goes back to 2005 when the wananga was looking for ways to unite the organisation after the Crown appointed observers and managers to oversee its operations and drive structural reorganisation.
He says while the event is amicable and celebrates kotahitanga and the pursuit of excellence in Maori performing arts, it is no less fierce with teams across the motu each wanting to take away bragging rights.
Defending champions Te Puna Matauranga ki Apakura from the wananga's Te Awamutu headquarters are looking for a third straight win.
