Tamariki and rangatahi voice needed in CYF reform
A youth advocacy group says the process to modernise Child, Youth and Family needs more input from young people and Maori.
An interim report yesterday from an expert panel called for a major overhaul which puts the child at the centre of they system.
It also called for an investment approach to be taken to service deliver and for a high level of cultural competence among staff.
Anya Satyanand from Ara Taiohi, which represents groups working in the youth sector, says the report has real clarity about CYF’s institutional issues,
"The focus on risk as opposed the the strengths of the young people being taken care of is a fundamental problem that has been pointed out. So focusing on the strengths of the young people includes bring them to the table in terms of the design, delivery, evaluation and both in terms of their own care and at a systems level," says Ms Satyanand.
