Tax law change could help trust house whanau
Community and Voluntary Sector minister Jo Goodhew says a law change may help a Northland trust which fears it could lose its charity status if it helps people into home ownership.
Ms Goodhew says He Korowai Atawhai is one of 39 charities affected by a court judgment against the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust.
She says the Department of Internal Affairs is working with the charities to ensure they meet the charitable purpose test, and if necessary advising them how to reorganise their activities to stay listed.
If that doesn't work, the tax law is being changed to assist the community housing sector.
This would improve the life outcomes for children while also reducing future costs for taxpayers.
It also wants an effective professional practice framework, allowing staff to use their professional judgment and cultural competence to support children based on clear principles, rather than rules, compliance and time-driven practice.
The panel says New Zealanders and communities need to be encouraged to provide loving, stable families for vulnerable children, take action to support vulnerable children and build their understanding of what care means for children and young people
