Waikato Tainui to plan marae futures
Waikato Tainui is going out to its marae to determine what support they want in future.
Executive chair Rahui Papa says with 68 marae from Te Puea in Auckland to Te Tokanganui a Noho in Te Kuiti, there are a wide variety of needs and circumstances to consider.
He says the iwi gives an annual grant to each marae, but developing a 10-year development plan will give people a better sense of where to put resources.
Mr Papa says marae need to consider what is sustainable both in bricks and mortar but also in upholding kaupapa and tikanga.
"Our marae for Waikato Tainui are the hubs for our people, they're our places to pray, they're our places to gather and they're our places where everyone from all over the world comes to when they are in need for karakia and all those types of things as well," he says.
Over the past year Waikato Tainui’s consultation with its people has included financial workshops, home buyers’ workshops, and mana matauranga education strategies, with consultation on its reo strategy yet to come.
The first hui on the draft marae development plan is this evening at Te Papaorotu Marae in Whatawhata, and the roadshow comes to Te Puea Marae in Mangere on Friday evening.
