Hapu claim ignored in forest carve up
A spokesperson for a Hawke’s Bay hapu says the crown is rushing settlements in the region to the detriment of those further back in the queue.
The crown intends to sign a settlement to the Heretaunga Tamatea claims around Hastings with He Toa Takitini this weekend.
But Jordan Haines-Winiata from Ngati Hinemanu me Ngati Paki Heritage Trust says the inclusion of the Kaweka and Gwavas crown forest lands in the commercial redress undermine the chances of his hapu getting a fair settlement.
He says because they want their claims heard by the Waitangi Tribunal rather than go to direct negotiation as He Toa Takatini did, they haven’t had a chance to put their claims to the forest land before the crown.
"This is not an offer for the historical or the breaches of the crown in regards to these blocks. This is about a commercial redress offer. We believe that because we have a direct claim to these lands where these forests are it doesn't matter what it's offered for or who it's offered for, all of us should be included in the offer," Mr Haines-Winiata says.
Ngati Hinemanu and Ngati Paki are seeking an urgent Waitangi Tribunal hearing on the issue.
