Long school trips fact of life on coast

Parents at Raukokore School in the western East Cape are being assured by their local MP the school’s closure could be good for their children.
From next year the 13 children will have to bus 45 minutes each way to Te Kaha under a reorganisation plan signed off by Education Minister Hekia Parata.
Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell says the merger of the of the area’s schools has been debated for a couple of years, and it’s a chance for a new start for kura in Te Whanau a Apanui.
"I mean you got to put it in the context some of the schools are pretty small. There's is probably a need for a refresh. I do feel for the kids having to travel some distance but that is not uncommon. That's just a fact of life on the coast, even going on sports trips and so on," Mr Flavell says.
