Maori tikanga resource available for growing organic kai.
People wanting to grow organic crops in accord with tikanga Maori now have a new resource to call on.
Te Wananga o Raukawa, working with Maori organic growers associate Te Waka Kai Ora, has published a handbook on maara kai.
Percy Tipene worked on Te Mahi Maara Hua Parakore with researcher Jessica Hutchings, who embraced the project after getting her own organic garden validated under the Hua Parakore scheme.
He says they interviewed growers to draw out the principles and tikanga that underpinned their efforts to grow a pure product.
"We are taking ownership of this and we are saying it is a pure product because ko enei ko nga tikanga i awhi ai i te kaupapa nei. So including a Maori food sovereignty handbook I think would be the easiest way to describe this mahi maara hua parakore to others who are interested in having a look at it" says Percy Tipene.
