Bedside prayers for reo scholar
Family and friends are at the bedside of language scholar Korohere Ngapo, who as critically injured in a motorcycle accident on Friday night.
The 43-year-old Waikato University lecturer was flown to Waikato Hospital after the motorcycle he was riding on crashed near Paengaroa in the Bay of Plenty.
He is on life support.
Dr Ngapo is credited with leading the revitalisation of te reo Maori Maori in Hauraki, facilitating wananga reo throughout Hauraki marae to ensure the survival of the iwi’s dialect.
In 2012 he became the first person to complete his PhD thesis in te reo Maori.
