Tuhoronuku bus tickets not wanted
Ngati Hine is looking at teaming up with other Northland hapu to push for a treaty settlement.
About 70 people met in Kawakawa last night to discuss the Waitangi Tribunal's finding that the crown's process to award the Ngapuhi Runanga-based Tuhoronuku the mandate to negotiate historic claims ignored the tino rangatiratanga of individual hapu.
Ngati Hine chair Waihoroi Shortland says it's a solid report, and he's pleased Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson seems to be taking the time to study it rather than coming up with a knee jerk response.
He says Ngati Hine shares more common interests with other hapu in the Takutaimoana Taiwhenua from Rawhiti up the Taumarere River than with the broarder Ngapuhi.
"At the moment I'm doubting there will be one bus ticket for everybody. There might be a bus out there but i don't know if people will be lining up there to buy tickets to take the ride," Mr Shortland says.
Hapu from Hokianga affiliated to Te Kotahitanga o Nga Hapu o Ngapuhi were meeting in Mangamuka today to discuss the tribunal report.
