Tribunal unsettles Tuhoronuku progress
The future of negotiations for Te Paparahi o Te Raki claims in Northland is now in the hands of the government, after the Waitangi Tribunal found the Crown breached the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi when it recognised the mandate of the Tuhoronuku to talk for all Ngapuhi claimants.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson says he wants to talk to Ngapuhi’s leadership about the report, but he believed progress had been made since the tribunal’s hearings.
Another round of elections for hapu kaikorero was held, with about 70 now represented.
The finding was seized on by the organisation’s critics, who see it as a victory for hapu sovereignty.
Co-chair Pita Tipene wants the government to heed the recommendation that talks stop until hapu confirm whether they want to be represented by Tuhoronuku.
But Tuhoronuku’s new chair is determined to keep moving forward.
Hone Sadler beat acting chair Sam Napia for the job on Friday by one vote after former chair Sonny Tau withdrew from the race.
Kara George replaced lawyer Moana Tuwhare on the deputy’s position.
Mr Sadler says trustees will be considering the issues raised by the report to determine how they would contribute to the Ngapuhi mandate.
