Call to extend scholarships to Maori boarding schools
New Zealand First says the Government should extend its private school scholarship subsidy to Maori boarding schools.
Maori Affairs spokesperson Pita Paraone says because schools such as Turakina Maori Girls College are integrated rather than private, students can’t get the Aspire scholarships,
The Ministry of Education has told Turakina it must close if it can’t boost the roll for next year.
Mr Paraone says ministers regularly attend fundraising events for private schools and organisations such as In Zone, a private trust providing boarding scholarships for Maori students to Auckland’s elite schools, yet the Government ignores the most vulnerable Maori students.
