Manaakitanga drives refugee policy

The Government's support parties are bucking National and asking for a lift in New Zealand's refugee quota.
United Future MP Peter Dunne says the Government had got it wrong and there was a strong case for lifting the annual refugee quote to at least 1000.
Now Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox has told Radio Waatea it's unacceptable that the quota has stayed untouched for 20 years, despite the increase in New Zealand's total population.
"Obviously we would base the intake of refugees on a kaupapa of manaakitanga. It's about how well can we support refugees coming into our country, will they be given support around language, also around understanding our culture, Treaty of Waitangi and the way that sits in Aotearoa," she says.
Marama Fox says there also needs to be an emergency response to the current refugee crisis affecting Europe.
