Lessons of war set out in waiata

A waiata about the 28 Maori Battalion has won Year 8 student Korakotaiwaha Kawana from Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Mana Tamariki in Palmerston North a supreme prize in this year’s Ngarimu Scholarship Fund Board challenge.
Students were asked to prepare a creative commemoration of the role Maori played in the World Wars.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says the waiata Korakotaiwaha wrote and sang was outstanding, with lyrics that spoke of the right and privilege of Maori to participate in battle.
Because of the quality of entries, another $1500 supreme award was given to year 12 student Rereao Taite, also from Mana Tamariki, for her artwork about the Gallipoli campaign.
Prizes were awarded to nine entries from a total of 30 applications received.
