Rotorua keen to trial online voting
Rotorua Lakes Council wants to try online voting for next year's local government elections.
It voted yesterday to tell the government it is will to be part of a trial that could involved 10 councils from across New Zealand.
Regular postal voting will also be available.
The council’s strategy manager, Jean-Paul Gaston, says the aim is to increase participation in voting.
He says online voting should prove popular with rural communities and with Rotorua's large number of non-resident ratepayers who live in other parts of New Zealand and overseas.
Councillor Merepeka Raukawa-Tait says it has the potential to change representation for Rotorua.
