Push for housing WOFs
Green MP Metiria Turei is making another attempt to get a warrant of fitness for rental housing.
She’s hoping to get a private members bill through the ballot to highlight the poor state of state housing.
It would set standards for ventilation, heating, freedom from damp and mould and containing basic amenities.
She says it’s something that will benefit whanau Maori.
"Because our ones are the ones living in the shitty state houses, and ours are the ones living in the shitty private rental houses, and so anything we can do to make landlords understand their responsibilities as business owners and make sure these homes are fit for families to live in is the right thing to do. It will genuinely save lives," Ms Turei says.
She says research shows there are up to 1600 premature deaths a year because of people living in cold, damp, inefficiently heated houses.
