Best Maori poets manaaki MUMA programme
Some of the country's top Maori poets sharing their work in South Auckland tonight in a benefit for the Out of Gate 'Whare Manaaki' programme.
They include the head of MIT's school of creative writing, Robert Sullivan, artist Tracey Tawhiao who will read some of the 100 poems she created for a blog, Deidre Nehua, Holyene Colthorpe, Hirini Hohaia.
Singer Mihinoa Naden will sing waiata and Rob Tuwhare will read poems by his father, the late Hone Tuwhare.
Organiser Claudette Hauiti from the Manukau Urban Maori Authority says all the performers have international experience, and it's a rare chance to see them at home.
An Intimate Night with Maori Poets starts at 6.30 this evening at the MUMA Community House at 7 St George St, Papatoetoe, gold coin entry.
