Sculpture of King unveiled
The New York based scuptor of a bronze carving of Kingi Tawhiao Matutaera Potatau Te Wherowhero unveiled in Hamilton today says it has been a huge honour for a non-Maori to do the work of a man who lead the world in non-violence resistance.
Garry Schofield who began the just completed work 30 years ago says the King was the epitome of the proud warrior tradition.
"He was extraordinary in that he believed in non-violent resistence like Kennedy a hundred years later who said the answer was reconcilitaion and justice which is a visionary way of looking."
Garry Schofield, who went to school in Hamilton with current Maori King Tuheitia says the sculpture that has been gifted to Waikato Museum represents the growing consciousness of a shared heritage between Maori and non Maori in New Zealand which is unique to the world.
