After nine mandate hui and 43 days of voting the Uenuku Charitable Trust has gained a mandate to represent the large natural group of Central Whanganui iwi named Te Korowai o Wainuiarua.
Trust representative Mahanga Williams says its been a long process but the fact that 82 -percent of whanau voted YES to their mandate gives confidience to their goal of building a brighter future for their tamariki and mokopuna while ensuring whanau are engaged and informed to make important decisions into the future.
"We managed to put a communications strategy to open up doors and to ensure that iwi and hapu and whanau can participate in the process" he says.
Mahanga Williams says while they are keen to move forward as quickly as possible he expects it will be a few years before there is a settlement with the Crown.
