Opposition toward tasers mounting
The backlash against all frontline police carrying tasers is mounting with the lead being taken by Maori politicans.
Maori party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell, Labour MP Kelvin Davis and Mana Movement leader Hone Harawira have all spoken out against the move announced by police late last week.
Now Greens co-leader Metiria Turei has joined those calling for the policy to be reversed.
"Our people are the most likely to be targetted. Theres been not enough work done on the bias inside the police culture and thats attributed by the police themselves . Some people are doing some good work but it hasn't really filtered through to the whole organisation. It's just going to be disastrous for our people" she says.
Metiria Turei says the push to arm all frontline staff with tasers appears to have come from the Police Association.
