Ngapuhi leader Sonny Tau's date with DOC has been put off a month.

The 62-year-old was due to appear at the district court in Invercargill tomorrow to fasce charges laid by the Department of Conservation over his alleged possession of protected native pigeons.

Mr Tau travelled to a marae near Riverton earlier this month to apologise to Ngai Tahu for the incident.

The matter has been adjourned until August 18.
