Dropping allegation sparks call for Serco sacking
Labour MP Kelvin Davis says there have been serious injuries and a death as a result of incidents in prisons run by private operator Serco, and the company should be booted out.
Mr Davis secured a snap debate yesterday on the multinational company’s management of Mt Eden Prison in the wake of revelations there have been organised fights between prisoners.
He alleged prisoners injured after being dropped from balconies were moved to other prisons so the incidents don’t mar Serco’s performance ratings.
"It’s just an absolute disgrace. Serco needs to go. It needs to be closed down. Prisoners have died and I’m really scared as well we’ll have another prison officer fatality if things aren’t addressed in a very short time frame," Mr Davis says.
Corrections Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga accused Mr Davis of "making it up" and he would wait for a coroner’s report on the death of the man named in parliament by the Te Taitokerau MP, but Labour says the Minister needs to answer.
