Maori motifs in flag shortlist

A Maori motif as a candidate for New Zealand’s next flag is highly likely.
That’s according to flag panel member Kate de Goldi as the panel starts the task of sorting through the 9000-plus designs submitted for consideration.
It expects to get a long-list of 50 to 75 by mid-August and then the shortlist of four the following month, to be voted on by a referendum in November.
The winner of that round will be put up against the existing flag in a second and definitive referendum next March.
Ms De Goldi says in making their choice they will take into account the hundreds of submissions on what New Zealand stands for and the feedback from the flag workshops, but there are plenty of Maori-flavoured designs to consider.
"The koru is there in a big way in all sorts of incarnations it's great and Matariki and tukutuku, all sorts " she says.
Kate de Goldi says the principles of flag design include simplicity, balance, a small number of colours and symbols with weight.
