Experienced heads at wananga helm
Te Wananga o Aotearoa chair Richard Batley has been returned to the wananga’s new council, this time as a ministerial appointee.
Tertiary Negotiations Minister Steven Joyce has appointed members to the first two tertiary councils to be established under changes to the Education Act.
The changes require a shift to a smaller number of councilors chosen for their skills, rather than the previous model of picking sector and stakeholder representatives.
Mr Batley is a Hamilton-based consultant and chartered accountant with affiliations to Ngati Tama, Ngati Maniapoto and Raukawa Waikato.
Mr Joyce also reappointed Maori education researcher Kathie Irwin, who until recently was chief advisor Maori at the Families Commission, and health administrator Rea Wikaira to the new council.
For Canterbury University’s council, the minister reappointed Bruce Gemmell, Tony Hall, Sue McCormack, and Catherine Drayton as members, and also appointed professions director and human resources professional Jackie Lloyd to the combined WelTec Whitireia Polytechnic Council.
