Peters looks for fall Guy in kauri swamp
Northland MP Winston Peters says an internal inquiry in the Ministry of Primary Industries over whether it was enforcing the law on swamp kauri was clearly a sham.
The minister Nathan Guy says his ministry did a good job and enforce the law appropriately, but he's changing the law in the interests of transparency.
Mr Peters says Mr Guy was spouting self-serving nonsense, and it was clear his ministry had allowed the export of large amounts of the valuable timber in an unprocessed form.
"This is a very valuable resource, highly valuable in its finished state, and all that work and added value should be in the hands of New Zealanders, and that is not what is happening. Minister Guy had an internal inquiry to exonerate themselves for failing to uphold the law," he says.
Mr Peters says Nathan Guy should be sacked for his handling of the issue.
