Commons licence translated into te reo
The Creative Commons copyright licence is now available in te reo Maori, the first time it has been translated into an indigenous language.
Creative Commons licences are free legal tools that anyone can use to share their copyright works more openly.
They are increasingly being used by teachers, librarians, artists, musicians, researchers and government departments.
Former Maori Internet Society president Karaitiana Taiuru says it’s an important step as it means te reo Maori resources can now be issued with the rights notice and licence details in the same language as the resource.
He says taonga and matauranga to be created, shared and published with the legal protection of the Creative Commons licences while recognising iwi, hapu and whanau, as well as whakapapa of the material.
The translation was completed by Ian Cormack from Taumatua Maori Language Services, who says the translation provided interesting challenges including finding appropriate kupu for ‘rights’, ‘database’ and copyright.
