Ngati Kahungunu ki Heretaunga initials settlement
Ngati Kahungunu ki Heretaunga-Tamatea will get $5 million in its bank account in the next few days as the first installment of its $105 million treaty settlement.
About 100 members of the iwi were at parliament yesterday to witness the initialing of their deed of settlement, which covers the significant loss of its land through aggressive crown land-buying.
The settlement with Ngati Kahungunu from the Hastings and central Hawke’s Bay are is one of a number of settlements that will eventually put the total settlement bill for the iwi at more than $300 million.
The initial payment is on account, with $3 million to go to marae and education initiatives and $2 million to be used to establish a habitat restoration fund.
Property to come back under the commercial part of the settlement includes the Gwavas and Kaweka Forests.
There is also $5 million to support the long term sustainability of Te Aute College.
Cultural redress includes the vesting and gifting back to the crown of Cape Kidnappers Gannet Protection Reserve and Cape Kidnappers Nature Reserve, and acknowledgement of the iwi’s interests in rivers, lakes and the Ruahine Range.
