Douglas to put Maori view on CYF review
Te Ohu Kaimoana chief executive Peter Douglas has been appointed to the Modernising Child, Youth and Family Expert Panel.
Social Development Minister Anne Tolley had come under fire from the Maori Women’s Welfare League and other Maori groups for not including any Maori on the panel, which is chaired by former Commerce Commission chair Paula Rebstock.
Mr Douglas, from Ngati Maniapoto and Ngai Tahu, started his acreer as a socal worker and also served as principal Maori advisor in the Ministry of Social Development before shifting to the Maori fisheries trust.
Mrs Tolley also appointed a youth advisory panel including eight young people, aged 15 to 23, who have experienced state care.
The minister says she has made it clear she expects a redesigned CYF to be more responsive to the needs of the child, rather than focused on administration and bureaucracy.
