Whanganui cleaning up after flood
Whanganui people are starting to clean up from the worst ever floods to inundate the river city.
Hundreds of people were evacuated by civil defence or left their homes voluntarily after the Whanganui River breached its banks about midnight Saturday
Ken Mair from Ngati Tupoho says it’s a warning about the limits on controlling the environment.
"It reminds us that we’re mere humans in this bigger picture so we hear there’s a big cold coming our way. That won’t inhibit us from getting on with the clean-up mode around some of our marae, clearing some of the roads and some of the houses that have been flooded," he says.
Mr Mair says slips means some communities up the Whanganui River could be cut off for weeks.
