New Zealander of the year Lance O’Sullivan says he had to eat humble pie over the way he tried to take control of a key trust at Hato Petera College.
A hui yesterday filled seven vacancies on the board of Te Whanau o Hato Petera Trust, which oversees the accommodation and other facilities at the Auckland Maori Catholic boarding school.
Dr O’Sullivan, a Kaitaia GP appointed to the trust by the Auckland Catholic diocese, told Radio Waatea host Willie Jackson it was a positive hui despite his efforts earlier in the month to move a motion of no confidence on chair tame Te Rangi over the school’s handling of recent discipline incidents.
"Tame’s still the chair. When the new board meets we will be talking about what’s required in terms of portfolios, in terms of chair and what governance, leadership position looks like, so that’s to be determined but at the moment we are working together. The war ax is certainly not a description I would use, we’re mahi tahi," he says.
Lance O’Sullivan says some elders criticised him for his confrontational style, but that’s the leadership style he learned from attending Hato Petera.
