Suicide hikoi set for healing film

Psychologist and filmmaker Paora Joseph sets off today on a journey aimed at raising awareness of suicide and what can be done to prevent it.
Joseph is traveling by bus from Taranaki to Te Rerenga Wairua, picking up five whanau Maori affected by the suicide of a family member.
They will stop at marae to hold wananga where the families will share their stories and invite other whanau in each area to participate.
The week-long journey via Whanganui, Rotorua, Auckland, and Whangarei will be filmed for a documentary, Maui’s Hook, which will have a similar format to Joseph’s previous film Tatarakihi: The Children of Parihaka, which was also a journey of discovery and resolution.
At Cape Reinga there will be karanga, waiata and karakia in an act of farewell to all those who have taken their own lives and forgiveness and liberation for both the living and the dead.
