Claimants have asked the Waitangi Tribunal to urgently produce a report into Hato Petera College.
Frank Rawiri and Bobby Newson of Nga Tauira Tawhito o Hato Petera say the Crown helped to sell off land at Northcote that was supposed to be an endowment for the Maori Catholic boarding school, weakening its financial viability.
They say the Government’s plan to sell off surplus land for housing includes a block that is part of the neighbouring AUT University campus, which they want as part of the settlement.
If that goes or if the school is closed, the claim becomes pointless.
Meanwhile, a meeting on Sunday will try to resolve some of the fresh turmoil gripping the school.
Kaitaia GP Lance O’Sullivan, who was appointed by the Catholic diocese to the board which oversees the school’s hostel, declared himself chair after a teleconference vote earlier this month and is demanding changes in the management and operation of the school.
He’s alleging not enough is being done about bullying, even though the Education Ministry says it’s happy with what was done about recent incidents.
Tame Te Rangi says he’s still the chair, because the number of members on the teleconference were not enough for a quorum.
He’s trying to keep the focus on getting a long term lease from the diocese so the school can offer certainty to parents considering enrolling their children.
