Kohanga Trust sacking sought
Labour’s Maori spokesperson Nanaia Mahuta says it’s time for Education Minister Hekia Parata to demand the resignations of the Kohanga Reo National Trust.
Under questioning in parliament yesterday, the minister refused to express confidence in board members, who are demanding settlement of the movement’s Waitangi Tribunal claim before they implement governance reforms.
Ms Mahuta says Ms Parata should have acted 18 months ago when former board member Toni Waho brought to her attention allegations about the problems facing the Board and its management systems.
She says the minister also needs to make it clear whether this year’s budget appropriation to Kohanga Reo will be at risk if the board does not make the necessary improvements to its governance.
The trust is currently working on a month to month contract with the Education Ministry.
