Mahinga kai focus wins Wai Maori dollars
Wai Maori Trust will fund five projects over the next year aimed at enhancing or protecting freshwater fisheries and their habitats.
They include a $20,000 grant to Riri a Te Hori Ahuwhenua Trust in Whanganui to finish restoring a wetland and fish passage.
A grant of $50,000 went to Rongomaiwahine’s Whangawehi Catchment Group to do water monitoring, riparian planting and fencing around mahinga kai.
Ngai Tahu’s Kati Huirapa Runaka got $50,000 to develop a geographical information systems database to help manage the Waikouaiti River, and Ngati Tuwharetoa’s Lake Rotoaira Trust got the same for a baseline survey of customary fisheries in its lakes.
Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai Trust has a $30,000 grant to develop a freshwater mahinga kai heath index so it can take part in management settings such as the Resource Management Act.
