Mana of community trampled in house plan
Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says the government is riding roughshod over the mana of the people of Ihumatao in its bid to be seen to be addressing Auckland’s housing problems.
Residents of the village around Makaurau Marae on the edge of Manukau Harbour are protesting the plan by Fletcher Residential to build 500 houses on farmland next to the Otuataua Stonefields.
The foreign-owned company has got its project classed as a special housing one, meaning it can fast-track planning processes.
Mr Henare says it’s a part of the city that has been ignored by central and local government.
