Omaka Marae home for Pa kids

Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell yesterday opened a new learning space at Blenheim’s Omaka Marae that is being used for a new Pa Kids programme.
Tineka Smith from the marae’s Maori Women’s Welfare League branch says it’s a is a weekly programme that teaches children about Maori language and culture.
She says with no bilingual units or Maori schools in the region, the marae needs to create as many possibilities as it can for children to be at the marae.
She says the programme, which so far has 14 children aged from 2 to 10, is seen as a stepping stone to creating a kura Maori at the marae.
